DIY: Fabric covered trash can

Fabric Covered trash Can

This is a great DIY if you are looking to add some updates to your room without breaking the bank. I just used a trashcan we had on hand as an easy way to change our surroundings :) Sometimes you need a little change in scenery and the easiest way to do that is REDUCE REUSE AND RECYCLE! :D

Supplies:
  • Trash can
  • Fabric of choice
  • Other decorators like ribbons bows flowers jewels ect Get Creative with it!
  • hot glue gun
  • Felt
  • Scissors
  • Measuring tape

Look how ugly this thing is^
I think my mom has had it since she got married it was in desperate need for an update

You need to get the correct amount of fabric so measure the height of the trashcan and the distance all the way around.  Add 2" to the measurements so that way you have room to tuck in raw edges.

Mine got smaller at the bottom so I took three all the way around measurements so that way it would conform to the can better.  This is optional it wont be a big deal if you do not do this.

1. Fold down the raw edges and glue it down the trash can

2. Fold the fabric over the top of the can
You do not have to hide these frayed edges because we are just going to line it with ribbon later

3. Glue all the way around the can until you meat your original side of fabric.  Again tuck in the raw edges and glue down overlapping the first side.

Now for the bottom..

4. Pucker the excess fabric and glue down to the bottom making sure you pull tight and fold over
If you are new to DIY this might take a little practicing but you just have to remember you can manipulate the fabric however you want just keep pulling tugging folding and gluing

5. Finally trace the bottom of the can on the felt cut out and glue over all the nasty raw edges

6. Remember in the begging how we folded the edges over the top? Now all you need to do is take quarter inch ribbon or whatever size will cover your edges and glue it down over the frayed edges.

Simple enough? ... I hope?

If you enjoyed this project enough to make one f your own or a verson like it I would love to see it.  Tag me in a picture of it on instagram @DIYNATION7797

DIY: Watermellon American flag shirt

DIY: Watermelon American Flag T-shirt
This is a great way to recycle an old t-shirt and an easy way to get rid of awkward fabric scraps you have laying around.  My inspiration was a watermelon but you could use any color combo you would like.

Cuttin to the chase:
I will go into detail how I made this step by step but for those of you who are just going to skip threw and look threw the pictures and go on your own here is the short version of what I did.
1. Gathered scraps
2. Placed in desired form
3. sewed in place
4. Drew on "watermelon seeds"

For the rest of you I will go into detail step by step with pictures :)

Supplies:
  • Fabric scraps (red pink and green for watermelon)
  • T-shirt
  • Fabric markers or paint
  • Sewing machine or sewing needle in thread

Step One: Place your fabric scraps

There is no right or wrong way to do this guys just go crazy and get an idea of what you want it to look like.

Step two: Sew down

If you feel more comfortable pinning yours down that is fine but I wanted a very frayed crazy organic look so I just started tacking down with no particular meaning.

Step Three: Draw "watermelon seeds"
Again no rhyme or reason just add the effect of watermelons.  Also keep in mind your maker or paint you use cannot be washable because when you put it in the washer it will just wash right out.

Step four: Cut sleeves
This step is completely optional but I was going for a very ragged look and I wanted a tank style.  Maybe try a crop top style?

I paired it with high waisted Gingham shorts I thrifted for 99 cents and a fruit patterned bow I made.

Hope you guys enjoyed it! If you happen to make this project or a similar project I would LOVE to see it.  Tag me in pictures of it on instagram @diynation7797

Recycled Cardboard Ribbon Organizer

Recycled Cardboard Ribbon Organizer
This project is soooo easy a kindergartner could do it because all it takes is some kindergarten skills.  This is a great way to organize ribbons and lace you have and also still have them on display.  This project is also very cost effective because your using only recycled materials.

Supplies:
  • Cardboard (recommended cereal box type cardboard)
  • scissors
  • ruler
  • pen

Notice
I just used a tacco bell box but some good examples of other cardboard you could use is cereal boxes, cake mix boxes, really anything that is a "light" cardboard.

Cardboard boxes do work just the same but these are much easier to cut and trace and work better for best use of space.

Step One:

Trace your rectangle onto the cardboard.

The measurements I used were 5" long and 2 and 1/2" wide.

You can make any shape or size you would like but for me personally was my fave.

Step Two:

Cut out!

Simple enough?

Step Three:
Wrap your fabric around it and stick a pin in it to hold.

Read bellow for some variations

Variations:

Cut out notches (like the one on the left)
Cut them out of actual cardboard boxes to wrap scrap fabric instead of ribbon
Cut different shapes like a square instead
Paint them to make them look cuter

Does anyone else have a random notebook were they scribble there ideas down? or document them? This is my notebook I just stuff with random ideas and things to go back to if I know I will be making this again.

Here I am showing you guys a ton of difffernt ways to use these.
There is one with knotches, one wraped sideways instead of the long way.  There is some that are holding two istead of one, or one holding lace and another more square one instead of wrecktangle.

Don't waist perfectly good materials!

These were actually inspired by these vintage ribbons.  Back in the day this is how ribbon and bias tape was bought instead of on a spool.  I like this way better I feel like its easier to store and easier to see what I have and nice and quick to flip threw.

To store I just put mine in cute little dollar store baskets.  I have about 4 different types of baskets I use to store this type of stuff in my craft room.

What are some handy ways you guys use to store your scraps and ribbons?

If you try any of these or any variations I would love to see them.  Tag me in pictures of them on instagram @DIYNATION7797

DIYs of the month

DIY's of the month:

I think the feeling of spring being here has really kind of cleaned out my brain with the smell of fresh air and let in plenty of new ideas.  This was really good for me because this month has just not been the best month (I will save you the details) but I find the best way to get through some terrible weeks is to just craft out the bad feelings.

Unfortunately my brain works in 5 million directions when I do this so I never think of taking pictures step by step I just JUMP right into it afraid I am going to loose the idea or I just get to excited I cant stop mid thought.

Since I did not save you guys any of these ideas special because they were more spontaneous I will just kind of show you a few of the DIY'S and maybe you will be inspired to make something similar or maybe it will spark up another idea.

DIY #2
Silver platter perfume tray

DIY#3

I have recently grown my jewelry collection to a HUGENORMOUS size.  Which that is great but I was completely out of space to put it all considering all my other jewelry holders were full to the brim.  So what do I do? I make a stick into one of the cutest jewelry holders I have ever owned in my life.

I really hate jewelry boxes I like my jewelry to be free and shown off so this was perfect.  All I did was add frame hanging backs and nailed some nails into it....

Yes... it was that simple...

Sometimes the most simple things are the most beautiful

This stick actually has a story if you would like to hear? no? well than don't keep scrolling...

in 8th grade I went to conformation camp. It takes place out in the wilderness and one of the activities we did was finding a big stick like this one for example and than sand it down and there was some bible story to go with it basically I kind of had a few meaning full prayers mixed into this stick.
Well I know everyone else who went to the camp with me just used theirs as firewood but for some reason I couldn't bring myself to get rid of the dang thing because the lady who taught us the lesson told us to take it seriously and cherish it and what not... typical old lady lesson but I kept it for this long I might as well make something of it right?  .....and so I did! and I am soooo glad I did.

Thanks for reading guys! I hope to have an actual DIY up soon and I am sorry I was away for so long.  Prom is Saturday so expect a post about that by nest week! Also I think I have a good idea for a DIY I am going to show for you guys.
